Trainers
Helga Huisjes
Helga Huisjes studied Music in Education at the Conservatory in Zwolle and Language and Culture Studies (Linguistics) at Utrecht University, specializing in the influence of music on (second) language development. She developed her own working methods to teach the vocabulary and pronunciation of Dutch sounds to children in asylum seekers' centres in a musical way. Helga currently works as a music teacher in special education, where language acquisition often also plays a role. Based on that experience, she followed the Dutch with Sign Language course. In the training, she introduces music teachers to working methods that are useful for working with refugee children.
Maaike Mayer
Maaike Mayer is an Education Specialist in Language Development and Multilingualism at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. She is a teacher in the programmes 'Education of newcomers' and 'Guidance of newcomers at school'. She also supports principals and teachers of newcomer schools in setting up a good language policy. Maaike has an enormous wealth of knowledge in the field of language acquisition and sound formation. From the start of Sounds for freedom, she has been involved with valuable advice in the development of our method and training of our music teachers. Do you want to know something about language acquisition? She knows!
Otto de Jong
Otto de Jong has been working as a music workshop leader for Musicians without Borders in conflict areas abroad and crisis shelters for refugees in the Netherlands for more than 25 years and has been developing the training offer here from the start. In addition, he is a conductor with the Leerorkest, among others, and as Head of Education at the Amsterdam North Music School.
Otto likes to share his knowledge and expertise and will zoom in on non-verbal communication with refugee children in his training. Because how do you 'talk' to each other if you don't understand each other's language? And how do you attract the attention of children in a music lesson if they don't speak your language?
Sander van Goor
Sander van Goor is trained as a music therapist and gives music therapy to children and young people with a refugee background in the Netherlands and abroad with his method 'Safe and Sound'. He specializes in trauma processing, resilience and music therapy. As a trainer he is associated with a.o. Sounds of Change, where he trains organisations in conflict areas in dealing with people who may be traumatised, such as in refugee camps. He is also a guest lecturer at a.o. Codarts and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. In his training, Sander focuses on recognizing and dealing with children with trauma for a safe learning environment in music lessons.
